Bulgaria is oldest country in Europe. Bulgaria is first national state in Europe which adopt Christianity and Bulgarian church became first national independent church in Europe in year 927.
Bulgarians created Bulgarian Civilization with Bulgarian language, Bulgarian alphabet Cyrillic and Orthodox Christianity.
Bulgarians spread Christianity and the Bible, translated into Bulgarian language and written in Cyrillic, among the so-called "Slavs" and incorporated most of the "Slavs" into Bulgarian civilization, including the Russians.
All so-called "Slavic" languages are created on the basis of Bulgarian language. Russian language and so-called "Slavic" languages on the Balkans are dialects of Bulgarian language.
Today about 300 million people in Eurasia including Russia use Bulgarian writing system Cyrillic as the official alphabet.

Such beautiful folk traditions exist all over EUROPE!
The people are unique all over EUROPE.
They built folks, people, LIKE ORGANS IN A BODY!
WHY DO LEFTISTS and religious fanatics want to kill all this?
From Iceland, to Ireland, to Sweden to Germany to Switzerland to the Baltics to the Bulgaria, Rumania, and so on......
Stop all this homogenizing and discriminating business!
Wake up!

Sorry, guys, just wanted to tell all you folks that love these renditions that many of them were written mostly in western notation in the end of the 20th century by a composer named Filip Kutev... Which is to say that this isn't authetic folklore in a any sense of the word. When bulgarians (used to) sing such music for centuries and centuries they never wrote it down and it was mostly monophonic. So there. Obviously interesting renditions but definitely not folklore.

kakehavata That doesn't really matter, the point is to preserve that way on singing. Because losing one's culture is very easy, especially if you are the minority. In most cases the minority gets assimilated.

I saw this fabulous choir in Utrecht, Holland back in 1993, and was blown away! Their tuning is just extraordinary! There's a school of thought that suggests ALL singing - so everything from Monks Plainchanting, to Modern Pop to Opera - all evolved from this ancient school of singing known as "Tuva."

The greatest music ever recorded. The most beautiful singers in the world. I love these women. Harmonically, rhythmically and spiritually the most advanced music on the planet. at 20:00 the quartet swings as hard as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and the soloist on the song at 23:30 is what every rock star should be. Every one of them is a virtuoso, together, they are pure Heaven!

I have never before heard this choir perform before, but the woman on the left of the other who stand up and perform around the 24:00 minute mark made me tear up -- SO much joy in her performance!
Also, I have read a couple of comments involving Lisa Gerrard. Is this the same choir who have performed on Adiemus's albums? If not, they bear a striking resemblance in sound!

Beautiful faces, beautiful costumes, mesmerizing, rich, haunting, addictive music. How proud Bulgarians must be of their folk music! LOVE THIS!
arxsyn - Πριν 5 μήνες
These ladies are like the Bulgarian roses they wear. Hybridized and beautiful. Their singing is interesting because it's a cross between modern day acapella choral singing and their hearty, traditional folk sound (which is a bit like throat singing and sometimes medieval sounding with Moorish/Andalusian influence like the Cantigas de Santa Maria sung in Galician-Portuguese). Ethnic Chinese folk singing sounds a bit like this too, guttural and throaty.
I'm sure the Peruvian songbird, Yma Sumac, would approve. Their ethnic, rustic would not be not out of place in the fields, and the countryside

Are they from differing family groups or tribes?  I see different dresses and styles on groups of 3 and four.
baphaaa - Πριν 5 μήνες
Their dresses are different depending on the region. The reason is not only to distinguish that, but I also heard that in the past they had engravings on the dress with engraved family markings, both male and female, in order to not accidentally fall in love for example with your cousin, due to the large size of families in the past. Guess it worked out well, as the vast majority of people here are very beautiful.

re. Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins: "Once described as “the voice of God,” Fraser’s singing has an otherworldly quality that betrays convention and ensures that no comparison with her to other singers ever feels satisfactory. Coaxed out by Grant, she reveals that her vocal style was greatly influenced by the a cappella recordings of Bulgarian folk singers. After coming across the cassette of Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, Fraser decided that she would learn it by heart and that it would be her “teacher and her home.” These Bulgarian women sing melodies that sound like they come from an era long gone, full of spiritual power that pang with religious authority, akin to the Muslim call to prayer or hymns sung by choirs in medieval cathedrals. After a single listen, the lineage between their songs and Fraser’s celestial, intricate harmonies becomes abundantly clear. They could explain her willingness to sing sounds of her own creation rather than words, as she sought to give her own vocals a similar aura of divinity."

The original 1975 album was put together by Swiss ethnomusicologist and producer Marcel Cellier and was released on his Disques Cellier label. Some of the recordings he made himself; others were taken from the archives of Radio Sofia. It was then released in the UK on 4AD which retained the French title of the original release. The French name stuck as their surge in popularity in the 1980s was on the back of those LP releases.
