Hey Keith,
I really appreciate the work that you're trying to do here..
I am an Indian student. I am presently pursuing my bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in India.
I just wanted to tell you one thing that we must not forget the fact that the grass is always greener on the other side.
You seem to be pretty impressed by the Indian system of education but please keep in mind that this system also has a lot of flaws.
The flaws that we as students know well.
All the students that you interviewed for their goals in life, everyone just gave you some academic answers.
everyone wants to pursue careers in the academic sector.
This is because they are hypnotized for a long time by their parents to pursue academic careers.
But there are other things to life as well.
The ultimate goal for a person is to be in the pursuit of happiness.
but these students, they simply are kicked out of pursuit by following the strategies and doing things that they don't like.
many are forced to quit their passions to do something else just for the sake of the parents and the societal pressure...

Only 2% of applicants gets into IIT.
Most IIT aspirants usually have USA Ivy league university as their Plan-B ..Many IIT rejects gets into MIT etc ...with scholarship. That's the level competitiveness in India..
I think Harvard acceptance rate is 11% n MIT is 10% but IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) ONLY 2%.

my profession is architecture .. but as a kid i used to say i want to be a designer or artist .. and other indian parents would laugh and say "it wont pay your bill". if these kids are really thinking their own way and not influenced by their parents then ok.. or else they will suffer like many of my friends did .Unhappy and disinterested in life.
presently it is bit difficult managing my own firm... bcs many people india though they might herald as being art lover nation.. they are not .. unlike in United states many people appreciate and buy art because as children they were asked to appreciate art..
I think India needs to appreciate artist in all spheres and actually encourage children to be outside the box . Like dalai lama said "the world now needs good story tellers" because enough hate is being spewed.

You get many straight answers in Vietnam as well. Most of my students (not all, mind) are driven by future prospects and abroad opportunities, often imagined by their parents. You get a ton of accountants and nurses out of that system and almost no artists and proper scientists.
I had one especially memorable cause where a student (21) said she will be a history teacher (due to the system, most Vietnamese hate history). I answered wow, you must love history then and she answered with a strict no.
Why then study it?
Because my parents want me to work at a public school.

actually a great problem in India is that when these kids will go to high school, they will give more importance to colleges, not their dreams..... it's like they'll study in IIT or any top institute, whatever the subject might be.
and yeah definitely, as a high school student i wanna say that i don't think the in US, high school (specially 11 and 12 grade) r so tough like India. (correct me if i am wrong)

Well it's great and all that these kids are inspired but lets be honest, it takes more than doctors and engineers to support a society.  It probably wouldn't hurt to inspire more career diversity, but i'm assuming that's easier said than done in a developing economy where the diversity may not be there in the first place.

Keith Ballard: what you want to be?
Me: to become a real sense full, helpful, understanding human being, I am very sorry to make fun of you with my comments below because I want to make a point with you,
when I was this age I tell these silly things but nobody tell what I mentioned above, as grew up I work hard like all Indian students did then I didnt get any mark for that, so I have to take secondary degree level, as I work for this I didnt get much qualification that I expect then I have no hope then registered for smaller exam, I was angry to myself cursed myself, but one day I saw a man whose injured in street with blood loss nobody came near him no school kids like them go near, no doctors look face on him, I drag him take to the hospital give him some help as I can and ready to give blood, but his blood is different then he healed get out off the hospital without saying anything, I was really happy that I could help someone that no one did, this make me happy than any others. when I tell to my parents they were angry and said dont you have things to study for your exam.but I replied you guys take me to school and in school you said you have to learn everything and that included moral science don't forget about it. so I use my moral principle to help him the only that I learn from my school is Morality and other things are used only for studies. now 24 I am still studying and didn't reach anywhere still I help others what they needs, morality is thing that I learned from school than anything, ONE GOOD NEWS for rare blood grouped people my blood is A-ve still ready to give free, if I cannot become what I am then I will do what I can,

Charity begins at home, the doctrine of the right, wrong, family values, societal and national values etc must be given at the early age to the children. It can be possible mostly when there is a strong family bonding, however, most of the countries splitting up of marriages are the major hurdles for the children to inculcate the basics.  Because i believe that children are not matured enough to take decision by themselves until they reaches to the age 14-15. Once they are at the edge to give their point of view and opt to their own education field then parents must not intervene and respect their decisions. In India Doctors, Engineers, Pilots, Defense personals are highly respected these makes younger ones to become one of them. Yet i'm a bit sad that none of the student showed interest of becoming a sports person, social worker or a political leader.

Well, at least these Indian  parents are trying to influence their children in some way to prepare them for the future.  Many American parents regularly do not try to influence, motivate or push their children in school unless it has something to do with sports.  I see this first hand at the public school that I teach at in San Diego, California.

If you don't know what our education system does for us don't just go around posting irrelevant stuff without having the basic knowledge about the subject. Indian education system has provided people with endless scholarship and stuff. Personally I like our education system.its well managed and its scholarship were a great help to me to receive higher education.

The reason finest brains come out is due to tough competition eg if u want to get into a govt medical school ratio would be around 1:200 so evry seat two hundred ppl would be competing....so we get the best brains but unfortuntely oppurtunities are very few here so they immigrate and the reason everyone says doc or eng is they are thought as profession which will defnitely earn u living and every parent trains from the day child begins to understand things my dad thought of making me a doc before i was born ...family attachments play a great role and children majority are from middle class study hard to make a gud living as well as parents proud ...parents also are very competitive about studies evrytime friend s or relatives meet they discusss about each of their wards achievements at school or college so which inturn leads to parents going home further motivating kids the competitive spirit is there which keeps on till the kid joins a job parents will be behind him but one thing we like about us is theres lot of freedom if u want to be rockstar u can be here then parents would say we r a middle class family that wont give u money thats a indefnite field so on ........so i think intelligence expands when u do something by urinstincts and choice and u can have choice when u r well economically i hope coming years india would come up economically also great work sir .....two ppl are most respected professions in india one is doc other is teacher great job sir keep doing

As an Indian I have a small insight into all of these responses. The society in India (parents, extended family, the general public) tells children that a doctor, engineer, or some successful business-related career are the only careers that a child should try to work for. It gives the public a sense of respect for the child and anyone who doesn't go into that area will not be as respected. The kids may seem like they are interested in those careers, but it is because of the enormous (and dangerous) pressure put on them to become something in that field, even if it is not their interest.

True, there is an upside and downside to it all. If it weren't for the direction my parents gave me, I wouldn't know what to do with my life. Thanks to them I am going for a doctorate in physical therapy (which I enjoy). It is just unfortunate that some people can't pursue what they want without feeling pressure for a different career.

I think the same pressure that is on us by our parents give us the foundation to be successful........I think our parents put pressure because they know that it is very easy to loose hope in our country that's why they want you to go into safer fields. But look now because of the iit engineers there are so many startups and people are getting jobs.Indians are considered to be hardworking and i accept that we are not allowed to go to some other fields but i feel that today indian youth is in everyfield, only engineering and doctors and scientists might be recognized but the artists are also coming up so as sports representatives of india. I have been in US for 2 years and the kids are really directionless and ii had my cousin brother and his american friends had noidea what to become.I think you people talk about the pressure but the care and commitment our parents have towards our future, look at west they ask their kids to move out at 16 -18 and also the kids dropout and work in mcdonalds. we are lucky that we dont go through all those things

its good that these children have a mindset of becoming doctor, engineer..etc , but the problem is they are choosing this field bcoz they dont have much option.., or its been fed into there mind by there parents Unlike america where people can do lot of stuffs and specialization in many subjects.., In india we dont have much options and thus you can find thousands of engineers and doctors graduating each year..

Dear Sir,
Thank's for doing a survey, the theme here is that basically,in 90's there we very few people who used to opt for engineer.let's give you an example,in my locality my grand father was the first engineer(i live in Jamshedpur(The Name of the major steel producing industry should ring any bell's "TATA STEEL",at that time my grandfather got a job there and people started spotting his turnover by this many of my locality came to know about engineering then the benefit's and that fascinated them the salary, the pay grades,.the social respect, major problem with the india people really don't care about the intrest, many of my relatives ask me about the Grades, the salary, the position,
why usually every girl want's to be a doctor?
Because in India everybody want's a Doctor as daughter-in-law.
why every boy want's to be an engineer is?
every one want's to be employed...(whether skillful or not they want the top position),
If you are fish you can't win a race with rabbit.)
and many of the parent's think that if my son is a painter,Game Designer he will not make out a good outcome.
and the sources also doesnt provide that much support.
there are no active club's for enthusiasist..
Let me tell you my story.
i am kaushik vedula(planned my future for game designing)
we have six in our group's and are working in an new android game,
and I being the team lead asked my sub lead to start from yester day..we first began hunt for a android developer
Search result-->not found any.
then we search youtube for tutorial's started making the game...suddenly power cut.
then my nearby uncle prompt's in and say's why are you wasting your time on vedio games go prepare for the engineering entrance exam's.
we are not given social support not resources
*poor powercut
*slow internet
*no access to any of the studio's nearby.
And if anyone of us migrates to U.S then he is equvalent to GOD.
I am very afraid of my country's future.
i will do my best to change the mentality of people.

Yes - India performs very poorly on PISA but do not discount the facts that India has many exceptional private schools and there are also many good public schools. Just with the numbers, India will crush you!

These piss drinking hyper-nationalists have ruined our country India. India ranked secnodn last in PISA's international education rankings. And yet these piss drinkers think we are great. This is what inferior quality education do to idiots.

+Saveen Sadanand we must encourage our children to think outside the box. i have seen many parents not giving their child story books because they think it will muddle his intelligence and make him score less marks... what a shame ..

The way that you write shows me that you must be ignorant and that you did not receive  a good education.  There must be a reason for this.  Did you attend a poor rural school in India?  I hope that you can learn proper English in the future.  This might help to have the possibility of finding a good job,  Good luck!

Hi Ankit,
As I travel to visit the 15 highest performing PISA countries in the world, I see great teachers and great policy.  The two work together. Policy is a big part of the equation,  The policy should be built on the best practices of the world.  The U.S. educational system has not been built modeling the best educational practices of the world.  Yes, there are some amazing students in the U.S. but overall, the system fails so many.  I see it as a teacher who works in the public schools.  Also - look at the 2012 PISA results - they are pretty bad for the U.S.

gud work sir i think the main motivating factor in india is family structure parents and teachers have complete control over kids they make strong imprints in their mind from a time very young am a doctor wat i am today is mainly because of my schooling ....u should visit kendriya vidyala schools controlled and maintained by central government u would see better response and ..i feel u can take better message home anyway thanx for ur research work

Keith,
I think you are treating US students rather harshly, some of them are truly amazing. Cognitive and Motor ability wise, I think US children are rather superior to Indian kids partly because of education (I have been through the motions with Indian education and now live in the US). Some of them are a bit directionless, but it is a much easily fixable problem in the US than in India, partly because the US society values individualism.
The problem really is that US K-12 is primarily tax payer funded, and in some districts (especially inner city ones), which require more work than the others.
The tax payers (genteels with no kids, single moms and dads and rather impoverished people) do not see the value of, or are unable to support such work, whereas schools in the suburbs have the communities that can and will (part of the reason why the Suburban schools perform so much better than inner city ones, and much better than Indian ones as well as I have seen, as the federal government provides more opportunities to children who are already capable of taking them on).
Inner City schools cannot play like the suburban schools do, so they need to develop their own style, they have to pragmatic, but they need teacher input for that, not policy.

The problem is not with the U.S. University system but the U.S. K-12 educational system.

I agree to some extent, although as a graduate student in the sciences in America, I have unfortunately noticed a lot of undergraduate students not care about school work and are more interested in drinking, partying and having fun. And I am noticing lower enrollment in science/engineering majors. This could cause a real problem in the future.
