Why bother trying to emulate The Police? They were unique. (Coughs...)

Somewhere between a lie and misleading - not only did the Police not “audition” at CBGB but as Sting himself has said in interviews they had already signed with the record company who had decided to “break” them in small clubs instead of touring as an opening act for Foreigner. They were not some undiscovered band that happened to play there.

or maybe it's a film. ya know, a gestalt of other artistic mediums (photography, writing, music, ext) in which the narrative of these characters plays out in a motif of the "audition". a film, a work of art. NOT a documentary (which in essence is also a work of art, because it's the documentation of a narrative crafted by an artist as opposed to objective documentation) characters in this film might be based on real events, and people. however as opposed to a documentary this is a work of fiction. so either hop off my dick, or are you one of those assholes debunking King Arthur as well?

I love this scene. It’s like a huge shoutout to The Police who were in fact pioneers of a whole new sound in their era. They mixed rock and reggae which was unheard of and that’s why Roxanne sounds so damn sexy. Stewart Copeland is in many hall of fames and is the 10th greatest drummer according to Rolling Stone. His studio is insane.

What the fuck is this crap? When the Police played cbgb's Sting arrived at the last minute as he had to fly to NY straight from the set of Quadraphenia, which was then being filmed in England. Great research buy whoever is behind this pile of nonsense. I hope the Police have'nt given their blessing to this, it looks terrible.

That is not a Stewart Copeland drum kit. And the actor is playing with match grip, not traditional grip.

The guy playing Sting looks 14, Sting was 27 or 28 when he played CBGB, and Andy was in his 30's. Kinda silly!

Perhaps I do not understand this clip. Is it supposed to be a reenactment of a Police audition at CBGB's in the Bowery? If so, that would be inaccurate and complete bollocks. The Police never auditioned to play at CBGB's. Ian Copeland set up a string of East Coast dates and CBGB's would be the first gig the Police played on U.S. soil. Andy, Stewart Miles and probably Ian   were already in NY.  Just after the filming of his role in Quadrophenia,  Sting flew Laker Airways from England and arrived in NY the night of the gig at CBGB's. There was no audition. He simply got off the plane, plugged in , and said hello NY... If this clip is attempting to show some kind of audition, I would sue the film company. Further, these kids in the clip look like they are 17. Sting was around 26 when he started to become successful with the Police, Andy was 36.. So this is also misleading...

the actors they got to play the musicians in this movie are horrible. Obviously they're not musicians or they would at least look like they're playing real chords and use real strumming techniques. Aside from all that Alan Rickman will be missed R.I.P.

If at least they had putted a live track of that Police era... Sure, the actors can´t handle this, even less a Dead End Job live performance or Next to you.

I agree. That dude looks nothing like Sting, the shot of the club doesn't look the same as the real club, and they didn't even try to make the studio version sound live. I played CBGB's many times, looks like just another Hollywood over-sensationalized bullshit movie with histrionic acting...

I have been playing live music in venues all over the world since the very early 80s. I played at CBGB a couple times in different bands I was in. Never once, in my entire career to date, has a band I'm in had to audition in front of the club owner, who sat in a chair in front of the stage. Unless you're in theater auditioning for a director, this doesn't happen.
Fred Jaminson
Fred Jaminson - Πριν 9 μήνες
You would think they would have been sent something by Miles Copeland, a tape with Roxanne or Message or Walking on the Moon so these thugs in the bar could hear it before hand. No club owner is going to waste their time with countless auditions, if you do not have tape, you get no venue.

+Akbar Basit : This never happened. What did used to happen, was that Monday night was audition night at CBGB, meaning if you played on a Monday night there, and if they liked you, you might get an offer to play a better night. But, The Police were a touring band from England with record label backing right from the beginning. Stuart Copeland, their drummer, was the brother of Miles Copeland, who owned the record label, Illegal/IRS. So, The Police would not ever have needed to be booked on a Monday night or have to audition for Hilly. - Andy the guitarist did write that the first night they played in the USA, was at CBGB, and the crowd was indeed small. But, we don't really know what "small" meant by THEIR standards. But, even so that crowd who saw them wasn't this sedate. Andy wrote: "No one there knows who we are, or have ever heard of us - we have to prove our worth, and knowing this makes us all the more determined to blow the audience away. We’re tired from the long plane trip, but somehow New York comes in off the street to fill us with adrenaline and we play a hard and edgy set that rivets the audience, who haven’t heard anything like it before. By the end of the first set the audience is on its feet and literally howling along with us. Despite the small numbers, it feels like a raging success."

As one who saw all the bands at the west coast grubby, shitty venues, the movie is good and entertaining, not perfect by any means. Imagine trying to please all the tossers who think they know about this period. Calling it "horrible" is bullshit. And, yeah, this scene could have been better. The Sting character can't even lip-sync properly besides being way too young.

Wrong guitar for Andy, his is a 60's Fender Telecaster Custom. That means it had white/cream binding on the body and Seth Lover Humbucker in the neck position. His also had some extra switches. This is a regular Telecaster, correct color 3 tone burst. They never came over to North America until they had an album and thus would have bleached their hair by this point (they bleached it for unseen gum commercial shot before release of Outlandos D'Amour). They were having success in the UK and came to tour the US, so an audition for a gig is unlikely to have occurred. This would have been one booking of many on their small scale US tour.

ThePustulioFoolio - Πριν 3 χρόνια
+Troy Gowler Not arguing that.. but they were definitely punk influenced in their early days. Watch some of their older shows. They were sort of like Blink 182 in the sense where they were punk that appealed to the masses.. then they kinda went the reggae route, then into a more artistic rock type music. Pretty incredible how many changes they went through over the course of a career that wasn't even 10 years long.

to make it sound like an actual performance, they shouldn't have used the actual record (because as you can hear in the beginning Andy's guit starts a tone or two below where it sits during the entire song). just saying
