Hey! I know this is a couple years later and what not.. but I figured you’re a pretty big Jonny Greenwood fan. So I also figured you’ve seen Thom and Jonny playing Present Tense live video. At exactly 1:26 within that video the same type of... I want to say counterpoint.. is used?... The same type you use to recreate Loop. Can you try and break down to me what is actually happening?... did Jonny prerecord a loop within the live performance and that is how he is able to do this?.. or is he playing off of what Thom is doing to create this effect? If you could, I would deeply appreciate an explanation of the crazy wizardry that I can’t figure out :(
I know you have explained this whole thing about loop but I just hear the same type of thing in Present Tense live. This one is ridiculous because of the counts but Present Tense is just a 4/4... I figured you were the only one on YouTube with enough patience to respond back LOL. sorry if this is annoying or like the rantings of a lunatic.
I’m a musician that is trying to figure out what is happening so I can try and create using this technique. Music is life. Peace.

Hey, man. Can I ask where you feel the beat when you perform this? Do you feel the 1 as coming between the notes of the original loop? When I try to play this I always go wrong quickly because my brain focuses on the original loop (timing and length) rather than what I'm playing.

I happen to have (almost) the same pedal Jonny uses, an Akai E2 Headrush

how are you recording if i may ask? do you have a loopstation? also no worries if it doesn't work at the first tries, practice makes perfect

Yeah, I understand everything you say here 100%. I had clocked the bars of 8/8. Thanks for advice, and the video. Both super helpful. I've been doing the foot tapping thing too but it hasn't worked yet...

exactly, it serves as a foundation. i just retried it and what i did was stepping every eighth of the 11/8 measure with my foot, a few times in a row. and after some time fill in the muted strums on every offbeat/and (while looping them of course). that's the easiest way to establish the correct rhythm in my opinion. as i played it right now (after i looped my strums), i tried to just forget that this 11/8 guitar loop existed at all and concentrated only on the "correct" rhythm (my strums), which is hard because you still need to begin at the "1and" of the guitar loop and so you need to have it in the back of your mind at the beginning, if the whole progression onwards should make sense at all. and, what you probably already now is that, every arpeggio gets played 4 times, except the powerchord which you strum 16 times. also from a logical point of view, the 11/8 guitar loop should (at least in theory) sound very off with the "correct" rhythm established by the muted strums since every emphasis is on the offbeat. but we are talking about a 10/8 measure with an underlying 11/8 loop so things get blurry and the speed of the piece doesn't do us any favor either. it's kinda difficult to explain.. but when you get the hang of it, the underlying loop somehow complements your chords and flows with it. maybe playing the track at a slower pace is what you need to get the grip of it. it's one of the best ways to practice something anyway. i'm glad if i can help!

Thanks so much for this thorough reply! Yes, it all makes sense, because I've done my homework in advance... I figured out all the time changes and everything, and have broken it all down in midi so I can see how it all plays out. But when I come to play it myself, I get lost really fast, because my brain is so set on the 11/8 loop rather than the 10/8 groove you have to play. I find it easy to place the notes on the "ands", but when it comes to change chord I lose it because I'm not counting in the right place. So you establish the "correct" rhythm with your muted strums at the start, right? I've tried to do that a lot myself but I just can't get my brain to lock into it.

fantastic playing man. How are you getting the phasing, delay type effect? Are you starting the second guitar on the 1 of the loop?
thedogisclosed
thedogisclosed - Πριν 2 χρόνια
Thanks! The guitar arpeggio which gets looped has 11 "beats". The second guitar starts on the "1 AND" of the loop (pretty fast and a little tricky to get right the first time) and has 10 beats. So with overlapping a 10/4 rythm guitar with an 11/4 rythm guitar in the background you get this kinda delay type effect.

+Collin Cameron the arpeggio which is played throughout the song is in 11/8 and the other one with the chord variations (which is played over the first) is in 10/8. this is why you fall for one beat everytime the arpeggio ends :)

Johnny Greenwood is great! Also when I hear something like this Robert Fripp comes to mind.
