Hey, I saw your videos from Germany. Im from Kronach, too. Really interesting, how great the difference to the US are. Its just normal to drink beer with teachers. Sometimes the whole class meets with the teacher at the weekend or even during the week and we have a little party - with beer, of course. Its just a normal part of daily life in germany, ecspecially in Franconia and whole Bavaria :)

I feel like we need a way to keep kids in check without hurting them physically or emotionally, they have too much power over us.

This is the best channel on education ever! Finally found someone who is willing to tell the truth about East and West when it comes to education. Good job. Keep on going Keith! I'll join you one day. 加油!

This is very different from situations in US. Average annual salaries of Berkeley's professors are 150K only, which is equavelent to 1 million RMB that is even a little bit below the average annual salaries of the same level universities' professors in China, who have, in fact, 20K incomes only but much much more grey incomes and research fundings that averagely 40% are taken into private pockets. So many professors are not into real academic research at all, transferring to cheat to find funds and to run their own companies. In addition, grading system is different in China's universities. Students only need to score above 60 for every course taken to satifying graduation if they don't want to go abroad or apply for Master Degree without exams. Chinese students regard universities as paradise because many of them think they should make up for lost time that was before going to universities.

In my experience and opinions about China's higher education--University, I think that the quality of higher education, in terms of academy not professional, in China is still better than that of US. Reasons people blame that higher education in China is worse than in US are that Information and News are not free, advanced software are not oftenly used and not installed by necesseities, easily, and advanced tests and research can't be really and heavily supported by enough funds. On the contrary, the aboves don't mean professors in China are poor. Many of them,in recent years, become at least millionaire and jump into industrial fields.

Keith, you really did a great research in these 2 giant countries! In addition, I want to add that high school students in Shang Hai are actually looked down by many high school students in other province, except Bei Jing, in China. Because, not only Shang Hai but also Bei Jing has the lowest national entrance exams scores and highest acceptance rate for students who have Shang Hai ID or Bei Jing ID, which is Hu Kou in China. Another interesting thing is that American universities strangely prefer high school students from those two cities more to students from other places of China. So, don't just simply regard Chinese undergraduates in MIT and Harvard are also genius in China, although they are still having excellent GPAs in Ivy Leagues.

oh...really?? that's nice :D i studied in the peel district, just besides the york district. i think the Canadian educational system should be highly similar to that of US. i'm very interested in your study, especially if you find any differences between the Canadian and US system...but i doubt :P

a most obvious example was when i learned some mathematical theorems in china, the exam question was usually to prove/derive the theorem, it really builds on a deep understanding of class material, and requires incorporation of a lot of knowledge from other areas and application skill. but when i learned the same theorem again in high school in Canada, the exam question was mostly straight formula copying and number crunching, and with a calculator...we were not allowed to use calculator in china, although some people think it's unnecessary, but it really helped build my sense around numbers and exercised my brain

You are 100% correct. I am not sure if I told you but I will be in Canada from March 17-22 studying the educational system at the York School District which is near Toronto.

sorry i got you wrong. i thought you mean the whole Chinese education system is better than US. with respect to the K 12 educational system, i absolutly agree with you. i remember a famous Chinese writer once said you can tell if a high school student is educated in china or US by asking them a few questions and ask three "why". he said US students have good breath of knowledge, but lack depth, some of them can't answer the first "why", most of them can't answer the second. whereas the chinese students can usually answer all three cuz they really go deep on knowledge

When traveling to China, I talked withhundreds of people. I did find that the Chinese htink that the American University system is better than in China but I never found a Chinese that think that the K-12 educational system in the U.S. is better. The Chinese understand and are aware of the low standards set and disrespect of the American K-12 educational system!

i feel like the chinese education tries very hard to push as many as possible the average students to the top. whereas in the US teachers leave those who WANT to be top student go to the top and let others find a place where they see fit, but in china it's like there are no other options, whether studying is right for you, you have to go to the top otherwise there's no future for you. i guess that's a byproduct of a competitive society. many chinese always thought this is quite pathetic but there are no better way out. i just found it interesting that you actually liked this system.

i found it quite interesting that while the chinese believe the US education system is better, you on the other hand are fond with the chinese education system. when you asked the question "what you want to be", you seemed to prefer the chinese students' more practical answers than the US students' answers which have a lot more varieties. i found this interesting since if you show this video to a regular chinese i think over 80% of them will say they like the US students' answers better and think the chinese students were overly "shaped" that they don't dare to pursue their true interest but have to be practical.

But I am impressed by the oral English of the teachers nowadays. Twenty years ago, almost all the English teachers had a typical Chinese accent. Things turn out to be much better now. That is good. Thanks for your work.

You seem to be really impressed by the discipline thing, but it is quite commone in east Asia. It is just a part of the culture, the byproduct of Confucious tradition, nothing special. It does not make a child to be a leader. Quite oppositely, it managed to transform a child into a good pupil, who always obeys to all the rules, and dares not to make any mistake. That's the reason why we Chinese students are lack of the spirit of innovation.

The truth is education system in China has much more trouble than its American counterpart. As a generation born in the 80's, we knew about the public school in US from 'Growing Pains'. But even with that so called 'improper behavior', you still got outstanding students like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, America was still the only place can give birth to Pixar and Google. Don't doubt in yourself. Your system works effectively and efficiently. The aim of education is not to shape children into workers on the assembly line, which is China might be doing right now. The aim is to help them to find their own way, to fulfill one's won destiny.

I have watched the China relating clips in your series, and I want to say something. The Chinese education system is way too much over-estimated according to your videos made in Qingdao. You mister were just so willing to believe in what the teachers said. I found that your trip to China was nothing but just reinforced the ideas that you had had made before you went to China.

Thanks for making this so public. I've taught in Mesa, AZ for 28 years and agree 100% with what you're saying and doing to make change. I feel like my hands are tied as far as speaking up to parents about discipline and homework. If we're too truthful, the parents are defensive, make accusations that we are picking on their kids and that we are too strict, they withdraw and take their kids elsewhere after complaining to the district, then our enrollment goes down and the district is not happy. So we have to pretend everything is ok and accept responsibility for lower scores when it is not our fault that the students don't pay attention, complete their classwork and homework, and in general don't have a work ethic. The parents teach them that so we can't get through to them either.
