Indian scenario: students walk barefoot in the class.
American scenario: A student pulls up a gun and shoots his friends and plays 'this is America'.

I am so grateful to my Math teacher in India. He taught us math so well that it helped in higher studies. We must respect our teachers.
Not insult them. I would have no career without this person who was literally paid hardly anything in US terms. we must share knowledge with the younger generation and this is why I will never charge money for teaching going forward.

I agree. The public schools in India are generally pretty bad. Based on Pisa test.
China is completely different, having one of the strongest ed systems in the world and getting better every year.
For the best schools in the world, I would put my money on Singapore, Finland, Germany and Switzerland.

Keith Ballard: I just saw your video. Though my comments are so delayed I still like to correct you on one of your observations. She is not teaching the numbers in a local dialect besides English, but instead in a regional language called Thamizh (Tamil for the western world because the British could not pronounce the word Thamizh where "zh" is a place holder for a special Thamizh only alphabet). Thamizh is a language (in fact, one of the oldest languages in the world predating English by many thousands of years) because it has its own alphabets, spoken form, and extensive literature, whereas a dialect is simply a spoken variant of a language with no original alphabets nor literature of its own. Also, I would like to enlighten you on your another observation that the teachers are bare-footed and not wearing any footwear. The reason: They don't want to drag the outside dirt into the classroom, so they leave their footwear just outside the class room. I have lived most of my life in the US and some of my American friends would not allow me into their houses without me first removing my shoes at the door. A note: Had you visited some other modern schools in India you would have noticed that every student wears shoes and their school uniform and the teachers also wear shoes and everybody sits at a desk and not on the floor.

I have been working in Amerca for many years as aerospace engineer. I sent back my son to India for his high school education. I think that explains everything about the comparison between Indian schools and American schools. My younger son is in Kinder garden. For his further education we are moving to India this year before he gets used to this system.

In India there is only rote education students memory a lesson and they dont know the meaning of that and they forget what they learnt in just 1 month but in u.s,u.k,singapore,japan,switzerland ,germany, france, australia and more countries students learn the proper meaning and dont forgot that for more than 1 year and also the education system in those countries are modern and good .So I think you destroy your children study on india.

It doesn't say anything about the American system. It say something about the system in the town/city where you live. The U.S. doesn't have a centralized system of education. Without knowing what town/city/district you are in, no one can judge whether the schools were good or not. High schools in the U.S. allow students to pick courses depending on their abilities and interest. Unless your son goes to an Indian school which allows students to do this, he's not going to get those choices. He's going to be memorizing volumes of information an spitting it out like a parrot.

Mr.Keith, It is a small wonder, you were on a guided tour to some selected schools with an agenda. You could have visited more private schools in cities other than Government run schools in rural parts of India for better exposure on the brilliance of Indian school kids. In fact the traditional transition of moral values on parents and teachers passed over to generations giving the highest regard to Teachers considered who is respected as the second parent even you address before God. The ancient Sanskrit quotes Hindus (Indians) and their devotion in the order of Maatha, (Mother), Pitha (Father), Guru (Teacher) and Deivam (God) which is reflecting in every student. Hence that guarantee the basis of self-discipline among students with obedience combined with respect and love for teachers. I myself is a teacher who loves the noble this service very much.If you happen to have an another opportunity to visit India do visit schools run by Ramakrishna Mission all over India for a wonderful experience where the future gems of India take shape.

At first, I was pissed at this guy for showing an Indian school which lacked amenities. There are much better schools in India with tables and chairs. I thought "OH God, once again these westerns just want to show the cows and the dogs on the streets of India. Then, I realized that 70% of India is still like this, rural, with no facilities and still we are producing thousands upon thousands of engineers, doctors, software programmers that we are proud of.

This looks to be a rural government school. It not the type of school in which you are required to pay fees. It is completely subsidized by the government I.e from desks to teachers and books too in fact the students studying there get scholarships in form cash from the government. You Western media just criticize us if you are comparing anything just compare it in equal class. If you want to compare anything please also mention the class of people benefitting from it,the quality and yes the price tag too. In your country you do have censorship laws for the news media while it's not in India. So here no one needs to waste our valuable time to travel a unknown county then it's most backward places and then compare it's flaws with the best and criticize it for gaining TRPs. Better you should make aware your government about your country's flaw. It would make your people's life better because the first support you would be getting is of your people's not this criticism. This only promotes the feeling of hatred and division which should be criticized.

And if they happen to work in any Northern State of India, they will be doing their day to day business in a third language (hindi). While the entire world is busy in cribbing about the poverty, these kids are happily building up there grey cells.

See what the teacher is doing wrong according to you is mispronounciation of a single alphabet are you a little retarded to see that this is just an accent well it appears so, well then what I really asked you to do is to explain your ideas behind being ashamed of this mispronounciation of yours and seriously dude you just pointed out that I am using the word bothered in a wrong way which is not the case please read some good books and watch some good English movies and if you can please try to think logically and have strong arguments and not give out any absent minded shit that comes to your mind because people will point that out and you will resort to these child like phony tantrums and find faults in others. Please grow up and be responsible and mature enough to hold a fair dialogue. best wishes for your pursuit.

I'm an Indian and I agree with you on this one. I don't think living in the past will take us anywhere. But, on the other hand I do not appreciate you comparing us with pakistan. That is one of the countries I hate the most. They kill our soldiers each week, so I'd say it's more of a personal (or patriotic) grudge rather then any other. That one does nothing but terrorism. And YEAH! I have to agree partially with that 'get out of Bollywood' I don't know about the rest though, as it's the choice of the people, but this world has a lot to offer then just bollywood, I'll be honest it just pisses me off. Yes, indeed, you are so very true, no ruler ever did, and ever will and as far as legacies of democracy go I don't think that's bad. But yes, it's us people who have to make a change, else we'll face the consequences. I'm just a Grade 11th student (Physics, Chemistry and Math) stream, and I want to thank people like Sal Khan www.khanacademy.org to do the job of making amazing tutorials, but that's not all, he had his father from Bangladesh, mother from India, but raised up in USA, had MS in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering. They have a motto of 'free education to anyone and everyone'. And I'm studying hard to raise up to those and reach out to them in order to get our education to the level of 100%... maybe not but, I mean I can talk all day long, but to cut it short, I like to make change and am doing my best to. Let's see how things turn out

Dude, get out of bollywood fictions you taught the world Maths, Engineering, Science with no schools, no institutions. No ruler in india made an any attempt to provide education let alone quality education. Even if we believe it to be true for a moment, look where are you now. Muslims ave a lot better history of scientists, Pakistan has produced some quality scientists and our military R&D is the the second best in the region after China. Goggle only has 15% Asian employees even if i assume all of them are indian, how do you count them 56%? Apple only has 18% Asian employees even if i assume all of them are indian, how do you count them 18%? I believe your source of informtion is the same is your media false reporting against Pakistan. Pakistan has the best military technology in the region after China. Pakistan is the new economic super power in the region with the completion of CPEC. Terrorism on its final stages as Pakistan is eradicating it all and soon its going to be the best technologically and ecnomically advanced country in South East Asia. Though it still has the best defence technology in South East Asia. Stop living in the past or in dreams, i believe better for everyone.

We have higher literacy rates and higher a gdp per capita when compared to the rest of the country. And lastly, out of the top 10 Indian(CBSE) schools in 2015 (chosen on basis of academics) 7 were in south India.

This is India too.  After reading the title of the video, I expected something about American schools as well. But, it speaks only about Indian school in this video.  Anyway, its nice to bring out info on other country and culture too. Kids in western countries needs to understand how privileged they are when they see this kind of videos especially getting education free of cost. They should also understand that unlike all Americans, most of the Indians do pay for their education, books and other stationeries.

+Jake B Just to let you know I am from Tamilnadu, South India. I am quiet familiar with what's happening in schools there. Days have changed and culture has been evolved too. There were days when lessons were taken outside in the yard too. Irrespective of North or South, wearing footwear wasn't part of India culture in early days . There were days some have used wood (like paduka) too for their feet. Now, people have moved on and many things have changed and evolved. Wearing footwear was adapted from different culture and from other countries. Whether North or South, Indians do not wear footwear to holy places (temples). Check Buddha's pic in Google. He won't be wearing footwear. But they do wear in schools in present days. Perhaps the school in this video has less discipline or simple reason is affordability. Definitely nothing to do with castes. Its all to do with the climate, environment and affordability.

I am from southern part of India. I guess Education has much to do with the mindset of student than his/her financial situation. Also, there are more Engineers and Doctors graduate from India. I have see some of relatives kids are getting prepped for Engineering Entrance exams while they are in 8th grade. I am sure there is hell of a competition for those Careers to part of top notch institutions.
I have done Master's myself in a University in Texas. I feel with the infrastructure like what we have here in USA, if its there in India, i am pretty sure there will be a quantum leap of development in science and research every day.

Not sure what is the objective of this video. I don't want to rake up any controversy or call names. Is the goal of this video just to show that India is poor? As you can see this is a school where poor children study. Everything including teaching, teachers, PE is done within the limits of what is available (Playground, teaching aids). The title says India vs US Education. But where is the comparison to US education?
Why people don't wear shoes? If you don't have food to eat and a large family to support, what would be one's priority?
If I see someone poor, my heart goes to them. I might even try to see how I can make any difference in their life. I hope I will never look down upon them. I hope Keith is not doing this either.

It is an interesting perspective. I have been in 3 different educational systems  in my life Indian (Central- Government of India)  ( KG to 6 th grade) , British (6th Grade to 11th grade) , Indian ( State- Government of Andhra Pradesh ) ( 12th grade to Bachelors) , American ( Grad student). I have almost seen it all :) .
My school days between the Indian and British , the actual material in terms of quality or quantity Indian education had a lot to offer, however  i felt my retention rate for what i "learnt and understood"when i was doing British education system was far better. An example i had a subject in Bachelors ( Engineering )"Engineering Mechanics" , i felt i could have passed or done well even fresh off my High school ( British), and this was one of the toughest subjects that many people failed in the first year.I had a similar subject in my British curriculum
In India, the lessons are "extremely fast paced" , and the instructor is like a "flawless radio" , the material is so good, but the classes are "dull and uninspiring". There is minimal interaction , and then there are average and below average student who get left behind because we are too embarrassed in speaking out in public. And do not get me started on the "teacher student ratio " . When i first experienced British curriculum the teacher for every subject had a clear "breakdown" of where i was weak in a PTA, In India the PTA is like" Your kid is just plain lazy he needs to work harder" , thanks Einstien i know he needs to work hard, but how do i direct his energies. So let us say A+B=9 , A-B=1, and in India , there is no way the teacher will look at "Where you are struggling with this problem ?" "He is just struggling" , but where the British helped me the break down in their analysis, Ability to understand A,B are variables yes/no, A, B ability to recognise as whole number yes /no , Ablitlity to recognize A/B could also be integers, negative number  yes/no , Ability to solve simultaneous equation yes /no , i mean the above is a simple example i though the teachers gave me more attention to what i was doing,I felt  our (Indian) educational system in sitting on "gold mine of knowledge"  but it is not designed for everyone to assimilate .
I think we have to take the best of both the worlds it is not black/white there is a spectrum i wish i could have do my Indian part better, i felt i could not analyze and rectify my mistake, may be because of "intimidation by competition" or "complete lack of sanity" i made it much harder than it was,in hindsight i had all the right skills and Ideas.
I wish our system offers every student gives more time to "getting it " rather than " bettering others", which is a basic flaw. Atleast IMHO.

Mr. Ballard - Do you, for a moment, think about the socio-economic conditions in which these kids grow-up? In case you're still in touch with your India-contacts (especially in Tamil Nadu/ Chennai) - do ask them about a tiny-little place called "Kasimedu" (its near Royapuram). That's where I was born & raised.
American kids see that the most successful (& *apparently* happy) people around them are either in Music or in Sports. When has there been a celebration of what a scientist achieves - like how America celebrates Michael-Jackson's albums? Kids form aspirations based on what they see & hear. Most Indian kids see that their relatives, elders in the families or elders in their friends' families are valuing certain professions. So, when *typical, middle-class* American families record football games and are amazed by basketball - and give two hoots about Astro-physics, NASA, NSF - what do you really expect from the kids? They constantly see how sports-persons & music-video folks are getting all the attention - they aspire to become the same.
If you'd been to India back in 1950's - most kids would have answered they wanted to get a government job - because that was the dream-job for the Indian *typical-middle-class* family back-then. If you visit India again after some 10-20 years - you will see that kids will want to join the creative-professions more (like acting, media, film-making, arts) - because today, the most notable successful persons are from these fields.
If, however, your aim is to promote an unfair *fear* in the hearts & minds of the American people - then, well, you're doing a fine job. I'm sure with proper persuasion, you'll have Republican support - at the least. I hope the liberals are better equipped to handle this fear you concoct (may be a vain hope).

Very bad video in fact. I think the person who made this video assumed that every single person watching this video is either Indian or a USA born and raised person. I guess his initial thought was for people to just imagine the schools in USA. Maybe his initial thought was that only American were going to watch this badly-made video and say " oh ok, so that is how its in India" then then just compare it with the obvious knowledge they have from USA schools. The title of the video is very misleading. I am not Indian and I am not American so I guess I will have to imagine the second part of this video...(lol)

The BIGGEST problem is how students are over-awed by authority figures. They hang far too rigidly on the teacher's word, or the text-book's word, that it becomes impossible for the student to actually THINK and be practical, and effective.

Seems like you did not get entry into a big good school in India   :)   This video does not at all depict the standards of teaching in India. It is far far better. If this is a genuine video it is of a small village. There is no harm in being barefooted.May be they like it better that way may be its too hot. The best thing is teacher is taking pain in teaching and kids are learning. Atleast kids are making some sense going to school and learning unlike schools in US or europe where parents pay a hefty amount of fees and kids go to school play and comeback in primary classes. There is no doubt countless intelligent indians working in good companies or setting up their own business. Look at your kids. They do not have sense and manners how to talk to seniors and you seem to be an example of this. What is the use of education when your use bad language?
Its all about thought process. Those who have to study do study. Those who do not have worl keep making videos ,waste their time and other s time too. Seems its time people to look at themselves in mirror!
